Needy Receive Christmas Gift From United Pentecostal Church

The United Pentecostal Church at Lumley Regent Road in the Western Area on Christmas day shared with the needy people by giving them used clothing and packages of food items to enable them to eat with their families.

Speaking to Awoko news paper, Reverend Rashid Turay who spearheaded the donation expressed that the Church did this offer because the church believe they had to share with the poor. He maintained that the offer to the destitute is an annual programme observed by the church.

The church members gave out what they had to the church and the church in turn gave to the needy he said. The donation exercise occurred before the church annual thanksgiving the Reverend disclosed. He further stated that the church started since 1996 in Freetown with a small congregation of members and now due to the performance of the church, the church is proud to have about 500 members who attended service in the church.

He added that since he took over the church in 2005 he has been observing this type of offering to the poor and needy adding that the packages given to the poor will be used and eaten during Christmas. Reverend said as Christians, at Christmas, they believe that they should not forget the poor because it is a time of sharing and that was the reason why the church is catering for the needy every year.

He stated that the church has value for education and with that they had built a school in the church compound where some of the children were given scholarship by the church to assist their parent.

“I call on other churches to cater and care for the poor because that was a mandate from God stipulated in the Bible” the Reverend concluded.
